Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the US. She has worked as media critic since. She founded Feminist Frequency which is a website which features video and posts on the representations of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in popular culture. Aiming to break down the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she is a vocal advocate for issues relating to harassment targeted at women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet environment. Sarkeesian is a graduate in political and social thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she's highly sought after and has spoken at TEDxWomenXOXO as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She was fascinated by feminist issues, gender and gender equality at a early age. In 2009, while still studying at university she started her Feminist Frequency website. The ambitious lady planned to start a web-based series examining gender representation in video games and found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. The attack wasn't enough to stop her. It actually strengthened her commitment as a feminist and media critique. She has won numerous awards for her numerous notable contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that explores the representations of women in popular cultural and the narratives that surround them.
