
DeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. During her summer stock performance she was persuaded by director John Toth to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was given the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA, she worked as a secretary up to her debut on television in the show's episode Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that they have never met. DeWitt is most famous for her part in Three's Co's run between 1977 and 1984 as Janet Wood. This was one of the roles she was offered after being cast in the pilot episode that followed. Janet was also featured in an episode of The Ropers that she appeared in the year 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984 then she stopped acting for several years. The stage was her first time back to the stage in June 1991 when she was a performer in an episode of the Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. In the following year, she appeared in the TV comedy Spring Fling! A character who was based on her voice, which was voiced by another actress, appeared in a 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She appeared in an episode Cybill and also made a brief appearance in Living Single's last episode. Her 2000s TV works include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as well as Call of the Wild.
